Guide to Viega ProPress Minimum Distance for Existing Soldered Fittings

The Viega ProPress System revolutionized the way pipes are joined by reducing connection time to 7 seconds or less and eliminating the need for burn permits and fire watches. As this method grows in popularity, we hear many questions about proper use. One of the most common question we are asked by customers is: What are the minimum distance requirements when connecting ProPress fittings near existing soldered or brazed fittings?

Viega answers this important question in the Viega ProPress Systems Installation Manual. Essentially the distance depends on the size of the tube diameter.

  • When pressing near an existing brazed fitting, the installer must remain at least two tube diameters away from the connection.
  • When pressing near an existing soldered fitting, the installer must remain a minimum distance away from the connection to ensure proper sealing of both the soldered and press connections. It is important to ensure there is no residual solder or other foreign debris on the tubing to be inserted into the Viega ProPress fitting.

Please use the charts below to determine the minimum distance required when pressing connections near an existing brazed or soldered connections. Failure to maintain the safe distance may result in an improper seal.

Tubing Diameter Minimum Distance (inches) to Brazed Minimum Distance (mm) to Brazed Minimum Distance (inches) to Soldered Minimum Distance (mm) to Soldered
1/2 in 1 in 25 mm 1/4 in 7 mm
3/4 in 1-1/2 in 38 mm 1/4 in 7 mm
1 in 2 in 51 mm 7/16 in 11 mm
1-1/4 in 2-1/2 in 64 mm 7/16 in 11 mm
1-1/2 in 3 in 76 mm 5/8 in 16 mm
2 in 4 in 102 mm 3/4 in 19 mm
2-1/2 in 5 in 127 mm 1/4 in 7 mm
3 in 6 in 153 mm 1/4 in 7mm
